Last night, hundreds of people took to Chicago’s Federal Plaza to voice their concerns following the re-election of former President Donald Trump. Organized by the Chicago Coalition for Justice in Palestine and other activist groups, the gathering highlighted a blend of opposition to Trump’s policies and discontent with the Democratic Party's stance on key issues, including the U.S. role in the Gaza conflict.
Protesters rallied around progressive causes like reproductive rights, immigrant protections, and ending U.S. military aid to Israel. The crowd expressed disappointment not only in Trump but also in the Democratic ticket of Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. Many attendees felt that the Democrats had strayed from the progressive values needed to energize voters and secure the presidency.
Frank Chapman, director of the Chicago Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression, encouraged rally-goers to channel their frustration into activism, stating, “We’ve got to defeat them. Welcome to the resistance.”
With chants of solidarity and calls for change, the march moved from Federal Plaza to Trump Tower, demonstrating that for many in Chicago, the fight for progressive values is just beginning.
🗣 “We need something new…something different,” said Danely Quiroz, reflecting the sentiment for change among attendees.
